## Q&A
### Which hi-vis class do I need?
EN ISO 20471 has three classes based on the area of fluorescent and reflective material; Class 3 is the highest. Many sites ask for Class 2 or 3 where vehicles and plant move. Your risk assessment and site rules decide. See hi-vis clothing.

### What do new starters need on day one?
Whatever their role's risk assessment lists, typically boots, hi-vis and gloves on site, or a branded uniform in customer-facing roles. We're happy to kit out a single new starter; there's no minimum order stated on our site.

### Who pays for PPE?
In Great Britain, the PPE at Work Regulations require employers to provide PPE free of charge to employees and, since 6 April 2022, limb (b) workers too. PPE is the last line of defence after other controls.
Source: [/pages/choose-by-job](https://www.theworkwearco.com/pages/choose-by-job)

### What hi-vis do I need for working on Network Rail infrastructure?
Network Rail's Personal Track Safety guide describes the minimum "all-orange" PPE: approved safety footwear, a helmet, orange high-visibility upper-body clothing (vest or jacket), hi-vis trousers or over-trousers and safety glasses, with extra items such as ear defenders or gloves depending on the work. Requirements are set by the infrastructure manager and principal contractor. See our RIS-3279-TOM orange range.

### What is RIS-3279-TOM?
The Railway Industry Standard for high-visibility clothing on the GB mainline, published by RSSB. It replaced GO/RT 3279 in 2017, with Issue 2 in force from 2019.
Source: [/pages/choose-by-job](https://www.theworkwearco.com/pages/choose-by-job)

### Why must rail hi-vis be orange?
RIS-3279-TOM specifies an orange colour with defined colour coordinates; yellow is not accepted. Always check your principal contractor's requirements.
Source: [/pages/choose-by-job](https://www.theworkwearco.com/pages/choose-by-job)

### What hi-vis class does rail clothing need?
RIS-3279-TOM requires garments that meet at least EN ISO 20471 Class 2.

### What safety boots do I need for rail work?
Network Rail's Shared Learning NRL23-02 says safety footwear must comply as a minimum with EN ISO 20345:2011, which requires midsole protection (SBP, S1P, S3 or S5). See S3 boots.
Source: [/pages/choose-by-job](https://www.theworkwearco.com/pages/choose-by-job)

### Do I need hi-vis trousers on the railway?
The PTS guide lists hi-vis trousers or over-trousers in the minimum all-orange PPE. See our rail range.
Source: [/pages/choose-by-job](https://www.theworkwearco.com/pages/choose-by-job)

### Does platform work need orange hi-vis?
PTS is required for engineering or technical work on a platform within 1.25 m of its edge, as well as on or near the line. Always check your principal contractor's requirements.

### What should I wear near overhead line equipment (OLE)?
Work near electrified lines needs a specific safe system of work. Where arc risk is identified, arc-rated clothing to IEC 61482-2 may be required. See hi-vis arc flash and the Pulsar PRARC07 rail-spec FR arc trousers. Always check your principal contractor's requirements.
Source: [/pages/choose-by-job](https://www.theworkwearco.com/pages/choose-by-job)

### What about third rail (DC) areas?
Third-rail areas have their own rules for working near the conductor rail. Clothing alone does not make it safe. Follow your safe system of work and your principal contractor's requirements.
Source: [/pages/choose-by-job](https://www.theworkwearco.com/pages/choose-by-job)

### Do you stock orange FR and arc-rated rail clothing?
Yes, including the Pulsar PRARC05 rail-spec 310gsm FR arc coverall and the PRARC09 arc waterproof storm coat. Check the arc rating your task needs.

### Does metal-free footwear protect against electric shock?

### Is S1P suitable for construction sites?
It covers sharp objects underfoot, but it isn't water resistant and has no cleated sole requirement. For dry fit-out and indoor trades it's often enough. For outdoor ground work, many sites ask for S3.
