# Standards: key changes

- **Safety glasses and goggles:** EN 166, EN 169, EN 170, EN 172, EN 175 and EN 1731 are no longer listed in GB or the EU (presumption ended 11 November 2025). New eyewear is certified to the EN ISO 16321 series. Older stock marked EN 166 may still carry a valid certificate.
- **Rainwear:** EN 343:2019 is no longer listed (EU: ended 4 September 2026; GB: ended 15 October 2026). Its replacement is EN ISO 24232:2025.
- **Non-work hi-vis:** EN 1150 came off both lists on 5 September 2022. EN 17353 replaces it; EN 17353:2020+A1:2025 is current, and EN 17353:2020 without the amendment stays listed until 16 December 2027.
- **Transition to 16 December 2027 (GB and EU):** EN 397:2012+A1:2012 (hard hats; replaced by EN 397:2025), EN 420 (glove general requirements; replaced by EN ISO 21420:2020+A1:2024) and EN 12492:2012 (climbing helmets; replaced by EN 12492:2025) stay listed until then. GB notice 0142/26 also lists EN ISO 12312-1 and EN 17353:2020 for removal on that date.
- **GB removals on 16 November 2026 (notice 0142/26):** EN 352-6:2020, EN 353-2:2002, EN 958 and EN 17109.
- **Powered respirators:** GB removal of EN 12941:1998 and EN 12942:1998 has been postponed to 8 October 2027; the 2023 editions are current.
- **Restrictions written into the GB and EU lists:** EN 149 gives no presumption of conformity for masks held on by ear loops rather than a full head harness; EN 352 does not give presumption for the attenuation-labelling requirement (Annex II 3.5, second paragraph); EN 795 does not cover anchor types A, C and D.
- **Welding clothing:** ISO withdrew ISO 11611:2015 on 18 June 2024 and published ISO 11611:2024. Most garments on sale are still marked EN ISO 11611:2015.
- **Management system certificates:** ISO 9001:2015 was withdrawn on 16 September 2026 (now ISO 9001:2026) and ISO 14001:2015 on 15 April 2026 (now ISO 14001:2026). ISO 45001:2018 is current; ISO says a revision is planned as ISO 45001:2027.
- **Product safety:** the EU General Product Safety Regulation (EU) 2023/988 has applied in Northern Ireland and Ireland since 13 December 2024. Great Britain still uses the General Product Safety Regulations 2005, with reform powers in the Product Regulation and Metrology Act 2025.
- **Recycled content claims:** Textile Exchange is moving GRS and RCS into its Materials Matter Standard (effective 31 December 2026, mandatory from 31 December 2027).

### What does EN 388 4X42C mean?
Read it left to right. 4 is abrasion level 4 (the top level). X means the coupe cut test was not done. 4 is tear level 4. 2 is puncture level 2. C is the ISO 13997 cut level, on a scale from A (lowest) to F (highest). Many cut-resistant gloves show X for the coupe test because tough yarns blunt its blade, so the letter is the cut score to compare.
Source: [/pages/certification-standards](https://www.theworkwearco.com/pages/certification-standards)

### What is the difference between S1, S1P and S3?
All three are EN ISO 20345 safety footwear with a 200 J toecap, a closed heel, anti-static properties and an energy-absorbing heel. S1P adds a penetration-resistant midsole to stop nails and sharp objects coming through the sole. S3 adds that midsole plus a water-resistant upper and, under the 2021 edition, a cleated sole for grip. Choose S3 for wet or outdoor sites.

### What hi-vis class do I need for roadside work?
In the UK, work on or near the public highway usually needs at least EN ISO 20471 Class 2, and a Class 3 jacket with sleeves on faster roads (typically 50 mph or above). Many highway clients ask for Class 3 everywhere, often with hi-vis trousers. Always follow your risk assessment and your client’s site rules.
Source: [/pages/certification-standards](https://www.theworkwearco.com/pages/certification-standards)

### What does CE vs UKCA mean?
Both marks show the manufacturer declares the product meets the safety rules for that market. CE is the EU mark and is also used in Northern Ireland. UKCA is the mark for Great Britain. Under current UK rules, CE-marked PPE can still be sold in Great Britain, so you may see either mark, or both.
Source: [/pages/certification-standards](https://www.theworkwearco.com/pages/certification-standards)

### What do X and 0 mean in a PPE code?
X means that property was not tested or does not apply, so the product makes no claim for that risk. 0 means it was tested but did not reach level 1. Higher numbers or later letters mean better performance in that test.
Source: [/pages/certification-standards](https://www.theworkwearco.com/pages/certification-standards)

### Can I wear a Class 1 hi-vis polo on site?
Class 1 items can be worn with a Class 2 top or trousers to raise the overall level. On their own they rarely meet site rules for vehicle areas. Check your site requirements.
Source: [/pages/choose-by-job](https://www.theworkwearco.com/pages/choose-by-job)

Source: [/pages/best-base-layers](https://www.theworkwearco.com/pages/best-base-layers)

### Can base layers be worn under hi-vis?

Source: [/pages/best-scrubs](https://www.theworkwearco.com/pages/best-scrubs)

### Which hi-vis class do I need?

Source: [/pages/choose-by-job](https://www.theworkwearco.com/pages/choose-by-job)
