Hi-Vis Clothing: frequently asked questions

What are EN ISO 20471 Class 1, 2 and 3?

EN ISO 20471 sets minimum areas of fluorescent background material and retroreflective tape. Class 3 needs at least 0.80 m² of background and 0.20 m² of reflective material, Class 2 at least 0.50 m² and 0.13 m², and Class 1 at least 0.14 m² and 0.10 m². Your site rules or risk assessment set the class you need, and roadside work near traffic often calls for Class 3.

Can two garments together reach a higher class?

Yes. A garment combination, such as a Class 1 trouser worn with a Class 2 jacket, can be certified to a higher class when tested together. That only applies if the makers' certificates list the combination, so check the product page or ask us.

What is RIS-3279-TOM?

RIS-3279-TOM is the GB rail industry standard for high-visibility clothing, which calls for orange fluorescent garments that also meet EN ISO 20471. Our RIS-3279-TOM Rail collection lists the garments certified to it. For work in Northern Ireland or the Republic of Ireland, check the requirements with your infrastructure manager or principal contractor.

Can you add our logo without affecting certification?

Yes. We place logos so they don't cover the fluorescent or reflective areas, because covering them reduces the certified area. DTF printing and vinyl transfer both suit hi-vis garments, and our team will choose the right method for your artwork.

How much does it cost to add our logo?

Embroidery is £3.99 + VAT and print is £3.99 + VAT, with no extra charge for the number of colours, logo size or design complexity. On your first branded order a one-off setup fee may apply (£9.99 + VAT for embroidery or print), and once your logo is on file you won't be charged setup again for the same design.

How long will my order take?

Branded orders take 7–10 working days in production, and plain items 2–4 working days. Once your order is dispatched, delivery is next day to Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, or 5–7 working days to Great Britain. You can also collect free from our trade counter in Belfast. If you have an urgent deadline, email sales@theworkwearco.com as early as possible and we'll do our best to help.

Can I return items?

Non-customised items can be returned within 28 days of receiving your order, unworn, unwashed and in their original packaging with tags attached. Customised items can't be returned unless they're faulty, in which case we'll replace them. If an item is faulty or we sent the wrong one, we'll arrange the return for you.
