PPE: frequently asked questions

How do I read the EN 388 code on a glove?

The code lists abrasion (0–4), coupe blade cut (0–5), tear (0–4) and puncture (0–4) resistance, followed by the ISO 13997 cut level (A–F), with an X where a test wasn't done or doesn't apply. For example, 4131A means abrasion 4, coupe cut 1, tear 3, puncture 1 and ISO cut level A. A P at the end means the glove has passed the impact test.

What do cut levels A to F mean?

The A to F cut levels come from the ISO 13997 test in EN 388:2016 and measure the force needed to cut through the glove. Level A starts at 2 newtons and level F at 30 newtons, with B, C, D and E in between. For sharp sheet metal or glass handling, a higher level is usually needed; your risk assessment should set the minimum.

What's the difference between FFP2 and FFP3 masks?

Both are filtering facepieces tested to EN 149. FFP3 gives the highest protection, with a total inward leakage of no more than 2% compared with 8% for FFP2, and the HSE gives FFP3 an assigned protection factor of 20 against 10 for FFP2. Tight-fitting masks should be face-fit tested for each wearer, and an NR marking means single-shift use only.

What does EN 397 mean on a safety helmet?

EN 397 is the standard for industrial safety helmets, covering shock absorption, penetration resistance and flame resistance. Optional markings show extra performance, such as -20°C or -30°C for very low temperatures, LD for lateral deformation, MM for molten metal splash and 440 Vac for electrical insulation.

What does SNR mean on hearing protection?

SNR (single number rating) is the average noise reduction in decibels, tested to EN 352 (EN 352-1 for earmuffs and EN 352-2 for earplugs). Under the UK noise regulations, employers must make hearing protection available from 80 dB(A) and make sure it's worn from 85 dB(A). Aim to bring the level at the ear below 80 dB(A) without over-protecting, as that can make it hard to hear warnings.

Can I return PPE?

Non-customised items can be returned within 28 days of receiving your order, unworn, unwashed and in their original condition with all tags and packaging intact. Unless the item is faulty or wrong, the return postage is at your cost.

Do you deliver to Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland and Great Britain?

Yes. UK delivery (Northern Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales) is free on orders over £99 ex VAT and £5.99 ex VAT below that. Delivery after dispatch is next day to Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, and 1–2 working days to Great Britain. Republic of Ireland delivery is free over €99 and €5.99 below that. We don't currently deliver outside the UK and the Republic of Ireland.
